About San Francisco, California, USA
San Francisco lies at the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California. A cultural hub and major financial centre, it is the fourth-most populous city in California, after Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Jose. San Francisco covers an area of about 121km2 and is home to more than 830,000 people, making it the most densely settled large city in the state.
Car rental in San Francisco is the practical option for getting around the area. You will discover why it is so popular as a tourist destination, with visitors flocking to see attractions including the Golden Gate Bridge, the quirky architectural mix, Chinatown, and the notorious prison on Alcatraz Island. San Francisco is also a significant business hub, representing the headquarters of five leading banks and many other large companies, including Gap Inc., Yelp, Pinterest, and Twitter.
San Francisco gets its name from St. Francis of Assisi, to whom a mission was dedicated in the area in June 1776. The town developed rapidly in 1849, when the California Gold Rush made it the biggest city on the West Coast for a while. It was largely destroyed by the 1906 earthquake, but an intensive redevelopment project saw San Francisco host the Panama-Pacific International Exposition nine years later.
