About South Beach, Miami
Called SoBe by those who know it best, South Beach is a neighborhood in the city of Miami Beach, Florida. It is situated east of Miami city between Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean and includes all of the barrier islands of Miami Beach south of Indian Creek. This was the first part of Miami Beach to be developed, dating from early 20th century, when John S. Collins's namesake bridge created the first essential land link between mainland Miami and the beaches.
Nowadays, South Beach is a prime holiday destination crammed with nightclubs, restaurants, shops and hotels. Both U.S. and international tourists flock here, with overseas visitors originating mainly in Canada, Latin America, Europe, Israel, and the Caribbean. A thriving regional economy and buoyant tourism have transformed South Beach over the past tourism, but another pivotal factor has been the weather, with catastrophic hurricanes in 1926 and 1992 (Hurricane Andrew).
In the wake of Hurricane Andrew, architect William Lane offered his services free to city, creating iconic lifeguard towers that immediately came to represent the recovery of South Beach and the surrounding areas. Other attractions include museums and institutions such as ArtCenter/South Florida, Bass Museum, and the Wolfsonian-FIU.
