About Sharjah
Sharjah is the capital of the UAE's third-biggest emirate (also called Sharjah), and is the only emirate located on both the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. The emirate has a population of some 800,000 (2008), with two-thirds of those based in the city of Sharjah. Sharjah city is bordered by the cities of Dubai and Ajman and is about 170km from the UAE capital, Abu Dhabi.
The Arabian Gulf coastline extends more than 16 km, with several sandy beaches. Escape the heat in lush green oases and rolling red sand dunes. The emirate stretches east to the Gulf of Oman coast, where the landscape changes to a dramatic craggy coastline flanked by towering mountains. Archaeological sites in the region date back as far as the 2nd millennium B.C, and later remains include 16th-century Portuguese forts built to direct the spice trade.
