About Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria is the second-most populous of the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, about 150km from northwestern Africa and 1,350km from Spain. With more than 830,000 residents, Gran Canaria accounts for about 40% of the entire population of the Canaries. Gran Canaria has been inhabited as far back as 500 B.C., when the Canarii are believed to have arrived.
The capital of Gran Canaria is Las Palmas, founded by the invading Castilian army in 1478. Together with Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Las Palmas is the capital of the autonomous community of the Canary Islands. The island itself is referred to as a mini continent because of its varied climates and landscapes. Choose from endless beaches of white sand, lush valleys, and pretty villages. UNESCO have preserved a third of the island as a Biosphere Reserve.
Car rental in Gran Canaria is the perfect way to get around, as the island is criss-crossed by roads reaching right into the mountains. Its motorways were among the first in the archipelago's first. There are three motorways - GC1, GC2, and GC31 - and two dual carriageways (GC4 and GC5). The island is served by Gran Canaria Airport.
