About Horta, Azores
Horta is a city in the western section of the Archipelago of the Azores, encompassing the island of Faial. It is a sparsely populated area with about 15,000 residents on the island and 7,000 people living in the city of Horta itself. Horta attractions include the Horta Regional Museum, where the permanent Exhibition of Capelinhos Volcano presents a series of photographs depicting 20th-century volcanic eruption in the Azores. The museum also houses an extensive collection of scale models of buildings, ships, and people carved from fig kernels by Euclides Rosa.
Horta marina is a major stop for yachts crossing the Atlantic, and its walls, and walkways are emblazoned with the details of vessels and crews that have passed through here. Peter's Cafe Sport, across from the marina, contains a collection of carvings from whale tooth and jawbone, and is a point of reference for trans-Atlantic yachtsmen and sailors.
