Acapulco de Juárez, usually called simply Acapulco, is a city, municipality and significant seaport in the state of Guerrero on the Pacific coast of Mexico, 300km southwest of Mexico City. With its location at the edge of a deep, semi-circular bay, Acapulco has been a prominent port since the early colonial period of Mexico's history, and serves as a port of call for shipping and cruising lines operating between Panama and San Francisco, California, United States.
Acapulco is best known as one of Mexico's original beach resorts, emerging in the 1950s as a refuge for Hollywood stars and millionaires. Celebrated for its social scene, it still attracts many tourists, although now originate in Mexico itself. The resort area is divided into the northern area made famous in the mid-20th century and the southern end, which is dominated by more modern luxury high-rise hotels.
