About Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur, often known by its initials, K.L., is the federal capital and the biggest city in Malaysia. Home to some 1.6 million people, it extends across an area of 243 km2 and is one of Malaysia's fastest-growing metropolitan regions. The iconic landmark of the city is the Petronas Twin Towers, the world's tallest twin towers.
Kuala Lumpur is a major tourist destination, with 8.9 million visitors annually. Most come for the city's cultural diversity and exciting variety of restaurants and shops, but convention delegates make up a growing proportion of the city's visitor population. The most popular tourist sites in the city include the Petronas Twin Towers, Petaling Street, the National Palace (Istana Negara), and religious sites such as the Jamek Mosque and Batu Caves.
Try to coincide your visit with one of Kuala Lumpur's many cultural festivals. The Thaipusam procession at the Sri Mahamariamman Temple is a memorable annual event. A silver chariot bearing a figure of Lord Muruga with his consorts Valli and Teivayanni is brought through the city from the temple all the way to the Batu Caves. If you're looking for entertainment after dark, head to the Golden Triangle. This area includes Jalan P. Ramlee, Jalan Sultan Ismail and Ampang Road and is home to hip nightclubs, bars and lounges.
