About San Vito Lo Capo
San Vito Lo Capo (or San Vitu, in Sicilian) is both a town and a comune in the north-west of the island of Sicily, Italy. A small town, with fewer than 4,000 occupants, it nestles in a valley among dramatic mountains and is framed by an attractive beach. Not surprisingly, one of its main industries is tourism, but agriculture (particularly olive cultivation) is another economic mainstay. Car hire in San Vito Lo Capo is a wonderful way to explore this part of Sicily.
From the beach, you can see a large cross perched on top of a neighbouring range of mountains, which is popular with local climbers. The mountain is dotted with caves, most of which are only accessible to professional climbers, but the Caverna della Capra Guasto (cave of the dead goat) is reachable at the southern base of the peak. The cave was discovered by Christian D'Angelo and William Spears, who uncovered the first record of the cave's use by humans.
Rent a car in San Vito Lo Capo and drive the 14km south to the Riserva naturale dello Zingaro, which extends along 7km of pristine coastline on the Gulf of Castellammare. Sicily's first natural reserve, it is home to many indigenous plants and animals, including birds of prey such as the peregrine falcon, common kestrel and common buzzard. The reserve also has a fascinating archaeological heritage, including the spectacular Uzzo Grotto - one of the first prehistoric settlements in Sicily. You are also just 110km from Palermo and 178km from Cefalu.
