About Turin, Italy
The city of Turin is a significant centre for culture and business in northern Italy. The capital of the Piedmont region, it lies largely on the left bank of the Po River, at the edge of Susa Valley, framed by the western Alpine arch. The city itself has a population of more than 900,000 people. Its nicknames include "the capital of the Alps" and "the automobile capital of Italy."
Famous for its wealth of culture and history, Turin has an abundance of art galleries, museums, piazzas, parks, and noteworthy architecture - particularly buildings in the Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassical, and Art Nouveau styles. Many of Turin's squares, palazzi, and gardens were designed between the 16th and the 18th centuries, following the transfer of the Duchy of Savoy from Chambery (in present-day France) to Turin.
Turin has been dubbed the "cradle of Italian liberty," due to its associations with Cavour and other noteworthy politicians and personalities involved in the Risorgimento. The city is home to some of Italy's best institutes of higher education, such as the 15th-century University of Turin and the Turin Polytechnic. The Museo Egizio and the Mole Antonelliana are among the city's prestigious museums.
