Car Hire Rethymno Crete
Dating from the Minoan era, Rethymno is an ancient gem nestled on the coast of Crete in Greece. It lies about 80km from Heraklion and 56km from Chania, both of which have airports, served by such airlines as easyJet, Ryanair, Monarch Airlines, and Aegean Airlines. You can also reach Rethymno by ferry from the port of Pireaus, in Athens.
Rethymno has been occupied by everyone from the Romans to the Venetians and the Ottomans - all of whom left their mark in the form of aristocratic architecture. The Fortezza, overlooking the old town, is a fortress dating from the Venetian occupation of Crete in the 16th century. Its massive walls enclose a number of buildings and offer wonderful views of the town, the surrounding mountains, and the coast, as well as making a wonderful concert venue.
Rethymno beach is one of Crete's finest strands. It starts in the town itself, stretching several kilometres east before breaking into a rocky coastline that leads to another fine beach, 8km west of Rethymno, in the direction of Georgiopoli. Further inland, you will find many spectacular gorges, which lend themselves to wonderful walks past olive groves, farms, and charming churches. Highlights include the Myli and Kourtaliotikos gorges.
