About La Plagne
La Plagne is a French ski area perched in the alpine valley of the Tarentaise (Savoie). Together with the adjacent resort of Les Arcs, it forms Paradiski's ski area. La Plagne is located between the Glacier de la Chiaupe, close to the summit of Bellecote, and the village of Montchavin, at altitudes of between 1,250 m and 3,250 m. La Plagne has 100 km2 of ski area, 225 kilometres of slopes, and a large off-piste skiing area including Bellecote's North Face.
A modern ski resort, La Plagne is connected to Plagne Centre and Aime-La Plagne via the Telemetro cable car, and to Les Arcs via the Vanoise Express (one of the fastest cable cars of its kind in the world). It is 34km from Moutiers, 50km from Meribel, and 27.5km from Bourg Saint-Maurice. Skiers have access to 8 gondolas, 36 chairlifts, and 38 drag lifts.
La Plagne was launched in 1961 as part of an initiative to revive the fortunes of the alpine valleys. At the time, decimated agriculture and mining industries had led to a stark reduction in the population. It was immediately successful. The old mining village remains, still with its traditional wooden chalets with roofs covered in the locally quarried 'blue lauze' slate.
