About Lille, France
Lille is a city in northern France, close to the border with Belgium. It is the main city in the Lille Métropole, France's fourth-biggest metropolitan area, after Paris, Lyon, and Marseille. It is also the capital of the Nord-Pas de Calais region and is located on the Deûle river in French Flanders. Lille is 110km south east of Calais and 51km west of Valenciennes.
Rent a car in Lille and you have a great base for touring northern France. With five auto-routes passing the city, Lille has the highest concentration of intersecting highways in France after Paris. This makes it a great place to start any trip in the region. Lille is also just 11.5km from the Belgian border.
Lille is full of Flemish-influenced architecture, with many buildings in brown and red brick and residential streets of terraced, 2- and 3-storey houses with narrow rear gardens. Landmarks include Lille Cathedral, the Citadel of Lille, and the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille. If you are in Lille Lille for the first Sunday in September you can't miss the annual braderie, the biggest flea market in France. Dating back to the 12th century, the annual braderie attracts up to 3 million visitors to the city, making it one of the biggest gatherings in the entire country.
