Car Hire Calais Ferry Port
Calais is a town in the department of Pas-de-Calais in northern France, but it is best known as a major ferry port. Home to some 125,000 residents, Calais overlooks the Straits of Dover, where the English Channel is just 34km wide. Calais is the closest town to England, and, on clear days, the White Cliffs of Dover are clearly visible.
Calais is one of the most important ports for ferries between France and England, and it is also close to point where the Channel Tunnel connects adjacent Coquelles to Folkestone, England, by train. In fact, Calais is such an important centre for transport and trading between France and England that it was annexed by Edward III of England in 1347 and was ruled by England until its capture by France in 1558.
Car rental in Calais puts you within easy reach of all the major locations of northern France, including Lille, Valenciennes, Lens, Douai, Bethune, and Dunkirk. Lille is an easy 111km drive from Calais, and you are also about an hour's drive from Ostend in Belgium.
