About Stockport
Stockport is a major town in Greater Manchester, 11km from the city centre, which lies at the point where the rivers Goyt and Tame combine to create the River Mersey. Dominated by the cotton and hat industries in the 19th century, Stockport now depends on a variety of industries. It capitalises on its heritage landmarks, including a national museum of hatting, a unique collection of subterranean World War II air raid tunnel shelters in the town centre, and a late medieval merchants' house on the 700-year-old Market Place.
Car hire in Stockport is a great way to get around the Greater Manchester area and beyond. Avoid the city centre and drive to Sheffield (62km), Leeds (80km), or Liverpool (66km) away, using Stockport as your base. You can also commute to Manchester city centre for business or shopping.
Don't forget to explore Stockport while you're here. The Hat Works museum is the only such institution in England and a must for anybody with even the slightest interest in how people dressed in the past. It is fascinating to discover how Stockport got its nickname - "The Hatters" - and how hats were made in Victorian times. The hat collection is charming.
