About Enfield, England
The London Borough of Enfield is located in the suburbs of North London, England. Created in 1965, it borders the London Boroughs of Barnet, Haringey and Waltham Forest, the districts of Hertsmere, Welwyn Hatfield and Broxbourne in Hertfordshire, and Epping Forest in Essex. It used to be relatively small market town in the county of Middlesex on the edge of the forest roughly a day's travel north of London, but as London expanded, Enfield Town and its environs developed into a residential suburb, with rapid transport connections to central London.
Enfield has a tradition of manufacturing arms, and the Lee-Enfield .303 rifle was standard issue for the British Army until 1957. The Bren and Sten machine guns were also made there, with the "en" in both names deriving from the site of manufacture. Firsts for Enfield include the world's first solid-state circuitry colour television (made by Ferguson), the first mass-produced dishwasher (Hotpoint), and the first ATM (at the Barclays Bank branch).
Car hire at Enfield puts you within easy reach of central London as well as other locations to the north of the city, such as Cambridge (84km), Bedford (82km), and Northampton (100km).
