About King's Cross (also written Kings Cross)
King's Cross is a district of central London bordered by north-eastern Bloomsbury and split between the Boroughs of Camden and Islington. It lies right in the heart of London City, about 5km north of Charing Cross. It is most famous for its namesake railway station, which acts as one of the main gateways to London from the north of the country.
The district has undergone significant regeneration since the mid-1990s, transforming it from a red-light district into cultural, business, and residential hub. In 2007, the area became the terminus for the Eurostar rail service at St Pancras International, with services to France and Belgium. Further redevelopment has introduced hotels, restaurants, and cultural centres, making King's Cross a highly desirable London area.
King's Cross used to be a village called Battle Bridge or Battlebridge, which was an ancient crossing of the River Fleet. Its current name derives from a monument to King George IV, which stood in the area from 1830 to 1845, and was dubbed "the King's Cross" when architect Stephen Geary exhibited it at the Royal Academy in 1830.
