About Fulham, London
The area Fulham is situated in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, SW6 in southwest London. This inner London district lies 6km south west of Charing Cross on the northern bank of the Thames, between Putney and Chelsea. One of the London Plan's 35 major centres, it used to be the seat of the diocese of "Fulham and Gibraltar", with Fulham Palace once the official home of the Bishop of London. The palace is now a museum whose grounds are occupied by a mixture of public allotments and a beautiful botanical garden.
Fulham has had many incarnations in its day, but it is now a leafy London area within easy reach of many exclusive districts, including Chelsea and Kensington. The football clubs Fulham and Chelsea both have their home grounds in Fulham. Car hire in Fulham is a convenient way of accessing the rest of central London, as well as the southwest of England.
Fulham's early history dates back 5,000 years ago, when Neolithic people lived here, and archaeological digs have also uncovered Roman settlements from the third and fourth centuries AD. In the 18th century, Fulham was something of a debauched retreat for wealthy Londoners indulging in gambling and prostitution, but today it is one of London's most expensive districts.
