About Finchley
Finchley is a North London district situated in the London Borough of Barnet. Located roughly 11 km north of Charing Cross, it used to be an old parish in the county of Middlesex but became a municipal borough in 1933, and it has been part of Greater London since 1965. Primarily a residential suburb, it has three town centres.
The hamlets that developed at the three corners of Finchley ultimately evolved into the three town centres: Church End (generally known as Finchley Central) is the area north and west of the North Circular Road that centres on Ballards Lane and Finchley Central tube station and belongs to the postal area N3. East Finchley, in postal area N2, corresponds roughly with the area between Highgate and the North Circular Road. North Finchley, in postal district N3, is the area around Tally-Ho Corner, which extends west to the Northern Line.
Somewhat confusingly, the London area known as "Finchley Road," around Finchley Road tube station, does not belong to Finchley. It is actually a district in Swiss Cottage, Camden. The area got its name from a stretch of the A41 road, which extends to Golders Green and ultimately heads north to Henlys Corner on the North Circular Road and Finchley.
