About Barking, London
Barking is an area of east London, England, that belongs to the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. Located just over 14 km east of Charing Cross, it is one of the London Plan's 35 major centres and has been part of Greater London since 1965. Barking has a significant residential area, and the heart of the town centres on shopping and business.
Regeneration efforts are being focused on the town centre, as well as former industrial areas to the south, which are being redeveloped as Barking Riverside. Car hire in Barking puts you within easy reach of central London and the rest of eastern England.
The name Barking derives from the Anglo-Saxon word Berecingas, meaning either "the settlement of the followers or descendants of a man called Bereca" or "the settlement by the birch trees". "Barking," short for the colloquial term "barking mad," is occasionally attributed to a supposed medieval insane asylum associated with Barking Abbey, but it is more likely to be a more modern invention.
