About Birmingham City, England
The West Midlands city of Birmingham is the second-largest city in England (after London), with more than a million residents. An average-sized market town in medieval times, Birmingham became internationally prominent during the 18th century, when it rose to the vanguard of worldwide advances in science, technology and economic development, being acclaimed as "the first manufacturing town in the world" by 1791.

With six universities, it is the most important centre of higher education in England outside London. Birmingham natives are called "Brummies," a derivation of the city's nickname "Brum," which originated from the city's dialect name, Brummagem.
