Herning is a Danish city in Region Midtjylland, on the Jutland peninsula. With a population of more than 47,765, Herning is Denmark's 11th most populous urban area. It was established in the 1800s and became known for the textile-weaving industry, although nowadays its industries are more diverse. It has won Danish City of the Year twice.
Rent a car in Herning and you're in a central location for travel around the Jutland peninsula. You're just 84.5km east of Aarhus, 88.5km north east of Esbjerg, and 126km south west of Aalborg. Herning lies at the junction of route 18, which crosses the Jutland Peninsula from southeast to northwest, route 15 that traverses the peninsula from Aarhus in the east to Ringkobing in the west and route 12 from Esbjerg in the south west to Viborg to the north east.
Karup Airport is located 25 km north east of Herning. It operates scheduled daily flights to Copenhagen Airport, as well as some international flights. Home to Messecenter Herning, the biggest exhibition centre in Scandinavia, Herning is well known for its trade fairs. A major attraction is Carl-Henning Pedersen and Else Alfelt's Museum of Art (also known as Herning Art Museum), as is sculptor Ingvar Cronhammar's distinctive monumental work Elia.
