About Launceston, Tasmania
Launceston is a city in northern Tasmania, Australia, located at the point where the North Esk and South Esk rivers become the Tamar River. Home to about 100,000 people, it is the second-biggest city in Tasmania after Hobart. It was settled by Europeans in 1806, making it one of the country's oldest cities, and, as such, it has a number of historic buildings. The city is named after Launceston in Cornwall, England.
Launceston is a place where many innovations have been launched. Among its claims to fame are the first use of anaesthetic in the southern hemisphere, the first city in Australia to have subterranean sewers, and the first city in the country to be illuminated with hydroelectricity.
