Melbourne Airport, also known as Tullamarine Airport, is the only international airport among the four airports that serves the city of Melbourne. It is Australia's second-busiest airport after Sydney International Airport, transporting some 30 million passengers annually. Opened in 1970 to replace the nearby Essendon Airport, Melbourne Airport is located 23 km northwest of Melbourne city centre via the Tullamarine Freeway.
The Melbourne–Sydney air route is a particularly popular air route, featured among the world's top three air routes. The airport operates direct flights to 33 destinations in all states and territories of Australia, as well as many destinations in Oceania, Asia, Africa, Europe and North America.
Situated in the sweeping bay of Port Phillip on the estuary of the Yarra River, Melbourne is Victoria’s state capital and the second-most populous city in Australia. A multicultural metropolis humming with life, it is home to some of the world’s most exciting art, music, food, and design. It is also sports-mad, with Melburnians going crazy around the Australian Football League (“‘footy”) finals and during Spring Racing Carnival. Melbourne the home of the Australian Football League (10 of the 18 teams are from the state of Victoria), and it is also an important hub for cricket, horse racing, and sailing.
