About Car Hire at JFK Airport
John F. Kennedy International Airport is situated in the borough of Queens in New York City, about 19 km southeast of Lower Manhattan. No other airport in the United States deals with the volumes of air passengers that JFK does. Car rental desks are located in the arrivals area of each terminal. Refer to your Nova Car Hire booking confirmation document for details of the opening hours and precise location of your specific car hire provider. A staff member will direct you to your rental car and tell you where to drop it off. Leave plenty of time for dropping off your rental car, as security measures are strict at JFK.
If you are collecting your rental car in New York City, there is a free AirTrain JFK service to Federal Circle station, where you will locate rental car offices and shuttle buses.
About New York City
It's hard to know where to start with New York City. Everything in the Big Apple is on such a grand scale, with more than 100 museums, some of them the most important institutions of their kind in the world. You're never going to see everything in a weekend, so don't even try. If time is limited, your best bet is to list your personal must-see attractions and take it from there.
Don't waste time at the airport: Once you land at JFK, get to the car rental desks in the arrival hall and take advantage of your hire car immediately. Now you're ready to explore the five boroughs and beyond. To get your bearings, remember that Manhattan is at the heart of New York City, the Bronx is to the north, Staten Island is to the South, and Brooklyn and Queens lie across the East River. Manhattan's road system follows an easy-to-understand grid system, with 12 avenues running north to south, and hundreds of streets running east to west.
Tips for Driving Your Hire Car in New York City
- You cannot make a right turn on red (unlike most U.S. cities)
- Be vigilant for pedestrians. Jay-walking may be illegal, but many people still do it.
- Have lots of quarters. Most parking meters only accept quarters, and, with parking at 25c for 10 minutes in many places, you'll need plenty of them.
- Note signs. You cannot make a left turn on many major avenues during specific hours, and you can be ticketed if you make an illegal turn.
- Don't drive in New York City! The Big Apple is easily traversible by taxi or subway, so save your rental car for driving around New York State.
