About Istanbul
With a population of around 12.6 million, Istanbul is Turkey's largest city. It's situated in the north west Marmara Region of the country.
Rich in history the city has plenty to see from historic buildings and museums to art galleries. Some of the most visited attractions include Topkapi Palace, the Blue Mosque and the Grand Bazaar. Aya Sofya, often referred to as Hagia Sofia in Greek or Church of the Divine Wisdom, was once a mosque, now a museum, is located across from the Blue Mosque. You'll also see plenty Ottoman mosques dotted throughout Istanbul.
Another popular tourist haunt is Eminönü located on the south bank of Istanbul's Golden Horn. It's also the end of the city's tram line.
It's a mecca for shoppers and there's always a vibrant atmosphere here, both day and night. Whatever you're looking for you'll find it here – clothing, toys, etc in the stalls that line the narrow streets behind the Spice Bazaar. The Spice Bazaar is actually Istanbul's second largest market and is probably the main feature of Eminönü Square.
The Beyoglu district is also hugely popular and is located in the heart of Istanbul to the north of the Golden Horn. As well as buzzing by day, Beyoglu has an incredibly vibrant nightlife. Along its narrow winding streets you'll find trendy cafés, bars, top class restaurants, cinemas, as well as some as some of the best shopping the city has to offer.
And don't forget to try some Turkish delight while in Istanbul!
Driving in Istanbul and Beyond
In Turkey motorists drive on the right hand side of the road and you always give way to the right at roundabouts and junctions. The country has a fairly extensive network of roads, all well maintained, linking cities, towns and other popular tourist regions.
The speed limit in urban areas is 50km/h; 90km/h limit outside built up areas; and 120 km/h on motorways.
