About Alanya

Alanya (previously Alaiye) is a beach resort city in the Mediterranean region of Turkey, 138km south-east of Antalya. Located on Turkey's southern coast, it extends across nearly 1,600km2 and is home to more than 240,000 people. Car rental in Alanya is a convenient option for touring this popular tourist resort.

A naturally strategic position on a peninsula jutting into the Mediterranean Sea beneath the Taurus Mountains means that Alanya has always been pivotal for a number of Mediterranean-based empires, such as the Ptolemaic, Seleucid, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman Empires. It enjoyed its most powerful position during the Middle Ages, when the Alaeddin Kaygubad I (after whom Alanya is named) ruled, launching a building a campaign that produced such enduring landmarks as Alanya Castle, the Kizil Kule (Red Tower), and Tersane (shipyard).

Nowadays, Alanya's balmy climate, scenic setting, and ancient culture make Alanya a prime target for visitors, responsible for 9% of the country's tourist trade and some 30% of overseas purchases of property in Turkey. The discovery of Damlatas Cave in 1948 prompted the first influx of visitors. The cave, which enjoys average temperatures of 72F/22C and 95% humidity, can be reached via trails from Damlatas Beach on the west side of the peninsula. Naturally, Alanya's sandy beaches, historic sites, great food, and water sports are other major draws. Alanya is home to Europe's biggest waterpark, Sealanya, and Turkey's largest go-kart track.
