Guide To Jona, Switzerland

Located in the St. Gallen Canton, Jona is located on the east shore of Lake Zurich. The area derives its name from the River Jona (meaning 'cold one') which flows into the lake. Early innovation in the 19th century allowed hydropower to be used in the watermills along the River Jona. Thus the rapidly growing village was now harnessing the power of the water to aid the fast growth of industry and commerce.

Jona and nearby Rapperswil amalgamated to form the new political and social area Rapperswil-Jona in 2007, and the area now has a population of under 30,000 people. It is now the second largest urban area after St. Gallen.
