Brief Guide To Fribourg

Fribourg is located on the border between German and French speaking Switzerland and is a hinterland between the two communities. It is a strikingly beautiful town and located over 550m above sea level, on the Swiss Plateau, along the River Sarine. Berne is just under 30km away. Fribourg today has a population of over 34,000 and is well served by the A12 Motorway.

Fribourg has been inhabited since neolithic times but was officially founded as a town in the mid 12th century. Controlled by the Hapsburg and Savoy dynasties, the town was incorporated into the Swiss Cantons under the 1848 constitution. Once a predominant cloth and leather producing town, with the decline in the textile industry Fribourg's leading industries are in the civil service industries.

Like Berne, Fribourg has a wonderful medieval sector in the old town. The Gothic Cathedral of Saint Nicholas is one of the biggest attractions along with the Museum of Natural Art and History. There are some wonderful festivals to be enjoyed in the town including the International Folklore Convention, the Jazz Parade and the Festival of Religious Music.
