Fribourg is located on the border between German and French speaking Switzerland and is a hinterland between the two communities. Fribourg has been inhabited since neolithic times but was officially founded as a town in the mid 12th century. Once a predominant cloth and leather producing town, with the decline in the textile industry Fribourg's leading industries are in the civil service industries.

Like Berne, Fribourg has a wonderful medieval sector in the old town. The Gothic Cathedral of Saint Nicholas is one of the biggest attractions along with the Museum of Natural Art and History.
