Stellenbosch is a city in the Western Cape located just 50km from Cape Town. The city was the second settlement created by Europeans after Cape Town. The city is sometimes called Eikestad, which is Afrikaans for ‘City of Oaks’, quite an apt name as the streets are lined with oaks.
The city is renowned for two reasons, the first is the Stellenbosch University which is a premier college in South Africa and it is distinguished for designing and building Africa’s first micro satellite SUNSAT. The second reason is that the Stellenbosch Valley (along with the Paarl and Franschhoek valleys) is part of the Cape Winelands and produces some of the finest wines in the world.
While the inner city area is small enough to explore on foot, the outer areas can be explored by car. The N1 comes out of Cape Town and passes about 20kms north of Stellenbosch on its way to Johannesburg and Pretoria. The N2 comes out of Cape Town on its way along the Garden Route towards Port Elizabeth and goes through Somerset West about 20kms south of Stellenbosch. The R44 can be used to reach either of these major routes. While Stellenbosch has an airstrip, the nearest international airport is located in Cape Town.
