Sandton is a town located in the northern parts Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan Area of in Gauteng Province. This area has become one of the richest in Johannesburg and by extension the whole of Africa, it has very sometimes been called the “Africa’s richest square mile”. This is largely because many of South Africa’s financial businesses which have moved from the Central Business District and went to Sandton.

The Sandton City shopping complex is by many accounts the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere. Another popular attraction is the Nelson Mandela Square which has a 6-metre tall statue of Nelson Mandela.

Located a few kilometers to the east is the R1 which is the main road that travels straight through the city of Johannesburg. On either end of the R1 it’s connected to the N1 which orbits the city. The N1 travels north to Pretoria and beyond, while to the south the N1 travels all the way to Cape Town.

Johannesburg International Airport is located about 20kms to the east of the city centre and it takes about 50 minutes (longer during rush hour) to get there from Sandton.
