About Pretoria

Pretoria is an elegant city, with several stately old houses in the city centre, expansive green suburbs, and broad avenues lined with blooming, purple jacarandas in October and November. The most notable attractions include Freedom Park, the Transvaal Museum (South Africa's leading natural history repository), the massive Union Buildings designed by Herbert Baker, the attractively green Burgers Park, the enormous Voortrekker Monument, and Freedom Park.

Located in the northern part of Gauteng Province, South Africa, Pretoria is the country's executive and de facto national capital. (Cape Town is South Africa's legislative capital, and Bloemfontein is its judicial capital). Pretoria is contained within the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality, and, although it is called after the Voortrekker leader Andries Pretorius, it is sometimes referred to as "Tshwane."
