About Rome City

One of the most famous cities on Earth, Rome is the capital of Italy, the Province of Rome, and the region of Lazio. Home to some 2.7 million people, it is the most populous city in the country and the fourth-most populous city in the European Union. The city is situated on the River Tiber, in the central-western section of the Italian Peninsula.

The only place in the world where an entire country lies within a city's limits, Rome is the location of Vatican City, which is why Rome is often called the capital of two states. The history of Rome dates back to 753 B.C., when the Trojan refugee Aeneas fled to Italy and established the line of Romans through his son Iulus, for whom the Julio-Claudian dynasty is named. As one of Europe's oldest continuously occupied cities, Europe earned the name "The Eternal City."

Due to the city's location right at the heart of Italy, car hire in Rome is the ideal way to travel. The city is the hub of a radial network of roads that correspond largely with the lines of the ancient Roman roads that started at the Capitoline Hill and linked Rome to its empire. The Grande Raccordo Anulare (GRA) ring road circles Rome at a distance of roughly 10km.
