Driving in and Around Utrecht

In The City Of Utrecht

Hiring a car is an ideal way to see the surrounds of Utrecht. Being close to several important road networks makes Utrecht an ideal base from which to explore the sights of Holland. Driving in the city can be a bit problematic though, as many streets are one - way, contain bus-only lanes and parking can be quite expensive. Free commuter coaches go to and from Galgenwaard Stadium, so it is advised to avail of this Park and Ride system. On weekdays, these free coaches go to and from Galgenwaard from the `Veemarkt` site.

Driving Outside of Utrecht

Use your rental car to explore the rest of the Netherlands from Utrecht. Two of the Netherlands major road networks pass quite near Utrecht. The A2, which links the cities of Amsterdam and Maastricht to Belgium, provides ample opportunity to explore the Dutch capital and one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands. The A12 links The Hague with Arnhem and Germany.

Guide to Utrecht, Holland

Utrecht is the capital and most populous city in the Dutch province of the same name. With a population of just over 300,000, it is the 4th largest city in the Netherlands. Utrecht is a well connected city and can be a refreshing stop after the frantic pace of Amsterdam. it is famous for its 14th century church tower, Dom Tower and every shoppers idea of heaven, the Hoog Catharijne, a large indoor shopping centre.

The historical centre of Utrecht is known as the Museum Quarter. As its name suggests, there are scores of galleries and museums to visit. Stop by one of the many cozy cafes and watch the world go by. Admire the stunning, medieval architecture of the surrounding streets and squares. The Dom Tower is the tallest church tower in The Netherlands. At 112 metres tall, it was originally built as part of the cathedral, but following a hurricane the church collapsed, leaving the tower as a free standing structure. Visitors can get a guided tour of the tower and the panoramic views over Utrecht are amazing.

Back in the Museum Quarter, the National Museum from Musical Clock to Street Organ provides a fascinating insight into self-playing musical instruments from the 15th to 20th centuries, along with accompanying documentation. The Railway Museum is another attraction worth visiting. On the site of the old railway, it is a delight for children who can admire the working train models as well as take a ride on a jumbo train.
