Guide To Enschede, Holland

Enschede is a city in the eastern Netherlands in the province of Overijssel and in the Twente region. The city was formerly a big centre of textile production but when this closed down, the city became one of the poorest municipalities in the Netherlands. However after much renovation in recent years, the city is now becoming more commercially appealing, with large department stores and shopping centres opening their doors in the past few years.

The Rijksmuseum Twenthe houses a large collection of 18th century and contemporary art. The Museum Twentse Welle is located in the heart of the modern quarter (Roombeek). It recounts life in the Twente region of Holland in which Enschede is located. However most of the exhibits only have descriptive text in Dutch and German only. Something more unusual but worth visiting is the Dragonheart Medieval Lifestyle shop over on Stroinksweg. This unique medieval themed shop has everything from medieval clothing to furniture and even has a range of weaponry.

The Old Market ( Oude Markt) is the location of many bars, cafes and restaurants and is an ideal location for people watching. Sit at one of the many terraced bars here for a beer and watch the world go by. Incidently Grolsch, the world famous beer is brewed locally in Enschede.
