About Toulon, France

Toulon is a city in the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur region of southern France and an important military harbour on the Mediterranean coast, with one of France's most important naval bases. It serves as the capital of the Var department in the former province of Provence. The urban area surrounding and including Toulon has a population of almost 560,000 people, making it the ninth-biggest in France. After Marseille, Nice, and Montpellier, it is the fourth-biggest French city on the Mediterranean.

Rent a car in Toulon and discover the delights of the French Riviera. In Toulon itself, you will find a charming old town nestled between the port, the Boulevard de Strasbourg and the Cours Lafayette. This pedestrianised area is criss-crossed with winding streets, little squares and tumbling fountains. The city is an important hub for ship building, the fishing industry, wine making, and the other manufacturing industries.

Get out of Toulon and find spectacular coastal and mountain scenery. The 584-metre peak of Mount Faron dominates the city of Toulon and is accessible either by cable car or by tackling the twisting road that rises sharply from the west side and plunges on the east side. This road is one of the most difficult stages of both the Paris-Nice and Tour Méditerranéen bicycle races. When you reach the top of Mount Faron, you will see a memorial paying tribute to the 1944 Allied landings in Provence (Operation Dragoon), and to the liberation of Toulon.
