About Angers, France
Angers is located in western France, roughly 300km south west of Paris, in the Maine-et-Loire department. Prior to the French Revolution, it served as the capital of the province of Anjou. The commune of Angers is the third most populous in northwestern France, after Nantes and Rennes. Natives of both the city and the province are called Angevins.
For centuries, Angers was a strategic stronghold in northwestern France. The birthplace of the Plantagenet dynasty, it served as an intellectual centre of Europe during the reign of René of Anjou. Angers developed at the intersection of the Mayenne, Sarthe, and Loir rivers. They merge to form the Maine, which flows into the Loire, a few kilometres to the south. Angers is a significant economic hub for industry, horticulture, and business tourism.
Almost 400,000 people live in the greater urban area of Angers, which extends across more than 40km2. Universities and museums mean Angers has a vibrant cultural life. The medieval heart of the town is anchored by the great Plantagenet chateau, where the Apocalypse Tapestry (the largest medieval tapestry in the world) is kept. Angers borders the UNESCO World Heritage site Val de Loire, as well as the Loire-Anjou-Touraine regional natural park.
