About Warrington, England
Warrington is located on the banks of the River Mersey, in Cheshire, England, about 30km east of Liverpool, 26km west of Manchester and 13km south of St Helens. With more than 200,000 residents, Warrington's population has more than doubled since it was established as a New Town in 1968.
The origins of Warrington date to Roman times, when it was a significant crossing place on the River Mersey. The Saxons later established a new settlement, and, by the Middle Ages, Warrington had become a market town at the river's lowest bridging point. It was at this time that Warrington developed its tradition of textile and tool production. The Industrial Revolution saw Warrington expand, particularly when the Mersey was made navigable in the 18th century.
