About Walsall

Walsall is a substantial industrial town in England's West Midlands region. Enjoying an extremely central location, it lies 13km northwest of the city of Birmingham and 10km east of Wolverhampton. Traditionally a part of Staffordshire, Walsall belongs to the West Midlands conurbation and is located in the Black Country.

Walsall serves as the administrative centre for the wider Metropolitan Borough of Walsall. Its urban area has a population of some 65,000, whereas the wider borough is home to more than 265,000 people. Adjacent towns in the borough include Brownhills, Willenhall, Bloxwich, and Aldridge. The name Walsall is believed to have come from the words "Walh halh", which mean "valley of the Welsh speakers" - a reference to the Brythons.

Walsall is essentially a medieval town, with its roots dating back to the 11th century. A church has stood on Church Hill since about 1200, and the current building contains a crypt traceable to the 13th century. Walsall developed as a market town and the market, which dates back to 1220, remains a popular attraction. Other visitor highlights include the 19th-century Arboretum, the Leather Museum, and Walsall Museum.
