Telford is a substantial new town in Shropshire, England, about 21 km east of Shrewsbury, and 48 km west of Birmingham. With a population of more than 300,000 between the town of Telford and its environs, Telford is the biggest town in Shropshire, and one of the United Kingdom's fastest-growing settlements.
Rent a car in Telford and you have a convenient means of transport for the entire West Midlands region. You are within an hour's drive of the major city of Birmingham, and Wales is just 172km away. With the M54 motorway linking the town to the West Midlands conurbation, towns like Stoke-on-Trent (69km), Nottingham (113km), Derby (90km), and Worcester (90km) are also within easy reach.
Telford got its name from the civil engineer Thomas Telford, who was responsible for the town's design. Built in the 1960s and 1970s, it was formed from the merger of such smaller towns as Wellington, Oakengates, Madeley and Dawley. Telford Shopping Centre formed the new town's geographical centre, together with a large town park. Neighbouring Ironbridge Gorge is a tourist attraction and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
