About Plymouth, England
Plymouth is located on the south coast of Devon, England, approximately 310 km south-west of London. It lies at the point where the rivers Plym and Tamar join Plymouth Sound. In 1620, the Pilgrim Fathers sailed from Plymouth and founded Plymouth Colony - the second English settlement in what is now the United States of America. The city was completely rebuilt after it was destroyed during World War 11 in the Plymouth Blitz.
Rent a car in Plymouth and you have a great base for visiting Dartmoor, the Tamar Valley and the beaches of south-east Cornwall. Kingsand, Cawsand and Whitsand Bay are fine beaches within easy driving distance. Plymouth landmarks include the 17th-century Royal Citadel, the 18th century Smeaton's Tower lighthouse, and the Saltram estate - home to a Jacobean and Georgian mansion. You are just 72km from Exeter, to the west, and 80km from Newquay, to the west.
About 250,000 people live in Plymouth. Shipbuilding still plays a major role in the local economy, but the service industries have become more important since the 1990s. The University of Plymouth is the ninth-biggest university in the United Kingdom, and HMNB Devonport is Western Europe's biggest operational naval base. The city is linked by ferry to the countries of France and Spain.
