Doncaster is a substantial town in South Yorkshire, England. The town and suburbs combined have a population of more than 302,000 and together form part of the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster. Doncaster is located roughly 32 km from Sheffield, and the two locations share an an international airport, Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield. Indeed, Doncaster is an extremely convenient location for car rental, being just 53km south of Leeds, 77km north of Nottingham, 80km west of Grimsby, and 113km east of Manchester.
Doncaster developed on the site of a Roman fort, which was built in the 1st century AD at a crossing of the River Don. There are a number of archaeologically significant sites in the town, although many are concealed beneath buildings. These include St Sepulchre Gate and the Roman fort - now covered by the striking St George's Minster, beside the River Don.

The origins of horse racing in Doncaster derive from its embrace of the lucrative stagecoach trade in the 16th century, which led to horse breeding and, in turn, a stellar tradition of horse racing. The first significant race was the Doncaster Gold Cup, first run in 1766, which is now the oldest continuing regulated horse race in the world. First run in 1776 by Colonel Anthony St. Leger, the St. Leger Stakes is the world's oldest classic horse race.
