About Richmond Upon Thames

The London Borough of Richmond upon Thames is part of south-west London in England. It belongs to Outer London and is the only London borough that is situated on both sides of the River Thames. Established in 1965, it resulted from the amalgamation of three smaller council areas.

Attractions in Richmond Upon Thames include Hampton Court Palace, Twickenham Stadium and the WWT London Wetlands Centre, so it is a popular area for visitors from across England and further afield. One of only two surviving palaces of the many built for King Henry VIII, Hampton Court Palace dates from 1514, but a massive rebuilding project launched by King William III halted in 1694, leaving the palace in two markedly different architectural styles - Tudor and Baroque. Richmond Upon Thames is also home to England's National Physical Laboratory.

The borough is full of green areas, being roughly half parkland, and major swathes of London's open space lie within the borough's boundaries. These include Richmond Park, Kew Gardens, Bushy Park and Old Deer Park. In fact, there are more than 100 parks and green areas in Richmond Upon Thames, as well as 34 km of river frontage.
