Originally known as the Manor of Gatwick, the area where Gatwick Airport now stands was owned by the De Gatwicks until the 14th century. In 1890, the Gatwick Race Course Company bought the site and opened a racecourse on it a year later. Gatwick Airport dates from 1930, when land beside the course at Hunts Green Farm was bought for use as a small aerodrome.
