Lanzarote is the 4th largest of the Canary Islands and it's also the most easterly of the Canaries.

The island is dominated by a volcanic landscape (much of the island is covered in volcanic rock) and Timanfya National Park, stretching over 50 square kilometres, is the Lanzarote's top visitor attraction. 

The best way to get to Timanfaya National Park is by car. While here check out the Montanas del Fuego, the volcanic rock and craters, and the statue of "El Diablo" by the late artist Cesar Manrique 

Other Lanzarote attractions include the Cactus Garden also designed by Mr Manrique, and La Cueva de los Verdes, located in the north of the island.

One thing you'll notice about Lanzarote is that it hasn't been spoilt by mass tourism. The towns and fishing villages remain unchanged and have a traditional feel. The majority of buildings are no more that 2 storeys high, with white washed walls with green or blue windows and doors. This is due to strict building and planning laws introduced by Cesar Manrique.

Arrecife International Airport is Lanzarote's main airport located just outside the capital city of Arrecife.

The island's main tourist resort is Puerto del Carmen. Formerly a picturesque fishing village it's now jam packed with pubs, restaurants and duty free shops. Puerto del Carmen is split into the "Old Town" and "The Strip" along the beach front promenade which stretches on for miles.
