Here's our short guide to the cities and stadiums where all the action will take place:

Johannesburg –

The only host city to have two venues for the tournament, the exciting city of Johannesburg will welcome soccer fans to the newly refurbished Soccer City Stadium and Ellis Park Stadium.

Ellis Park Stadium is located in the very centre of Johannesburg and has a capacity of 62,000. Facilities at the stadium include media/press amenities, VIP areas, access for disabled fans and top-class audio-visual facilities that will keep all fans up-to-date during the course of the action.

Soccer City Stadium is situated in the southwest of Johannesburg and is close to the soccer crazy township of Soweto. This stadium is definitely the jewel in the crown of South Africa's World Cup with its unique African inspired design (themed around the African cooking pot, the calabash). Soccer City Stadium has a capacity of 94,7000 and will host both the opening game (and ceremony) and the World Cup Final itself.

Cape Town –

The city of Cape Town has constructed a brand new venue for the World Cup called Green Point Stadium, which is located in the suburban area of Green Point. The stadium will be within walking distance of the main public transportation centre of Cape Town and shall have a total capacity of 70,000 fans.

The stunning Table Mountain will provide a wonderful backdrop to Green Point Stadium with the ocean also nearby so this is likely to be one of the most scenically located of all venues!

Durban –

Durban Stadium, or Durban's Moses Mabhida Stadium to give the venue its full title, is being constructed in the Kings Park Sporting Precinct area of Durban city. This architectural showpiece will certainly be a stadium with a difference, as this amphitheatre-style venue will have a cable car running to a viewing platform on top of the stadium's 350m arch! So along with views of the impressive venue below you can also enjoy views over the city and coastline.

And if that wasn't unique enough, this 70,000 seater stadium will be surrounded in the local area by other sporting facilities and arenas along with endless restaurants, shops, play areas for kids and even a pedestrian walkway that will link the stadium complex to the beach. Green Point Stadium is scheduled to host one of the two World Cup Semi Finals.

Mangaung / Bloemfontein –

Free State Stadium in Mangaung / Bloemfontein, Free State Province is the venue for teams competing in this part of South Africa. The stadium will have an increased capacity of 48,000 by the time the first game kicks off here and it is the home ground of local soccer club Bloemfontein Celtics.

Free State Stadium has already had a few dress rehearsals in preparation for the 2010 World Cup as it was used as a venue for the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup.

Nelson Mandela Bay / Port Elizabeth –

With a name as welcoming as "the Friendly City", you can be sure that Nelson Mandela Bay / Port Elizabeth will become a favourite with soccer fans who travel there. The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is built on the North End Lake part of the city and will provide a unique setting to match the venue's unique three-tier design.

Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium has a capacity of 48,000 fans and the awarding of the World Cup to South Africa has given this soccer-mad city the opportunity to have a football stadium constructed. This venue will host the third and fourth place play-offs of the tournament.

Nelspruit –

Nelspruit city in the Mpumalanga Province is home to the Mbombela Stadium, which is one of the specially commissioned venues for the tournament. The stadium is situated about 7km from Nelspruit city centre and lies roughly 12km from Kruger-Mpumalanga International Airport.

With a capacity of 46,000, the stadium provides a superb opportunity for fans to visit nearby Kruger National Park and other game reserves so a complete holiday can be planned for those fans based in Nelspruit.

Polokwane –

The host city of Polokwane in the Limpopo Province has constructed a brand new venue for the 2010 World Cup in the guise of the Peter Mokaba Stadium. The venue is located just 5km from Polokwane city centre and is named after the anti-apartheid activist, Peter Mokaba who was from the city.

The stadium is viewed as a hugely positive addition to the city of Polokwane and it has a capacity of 45,000.

Rustenberg –

Royal Bafokeng Stadium will proudly be the venue for World Cup games held in the city of Rustenberg. The stadium is located about 12km from Rustenberg city centre while along being approximately a 25 minute drive away from the famous tourist resort of Sun City and roughly 30 minutes drive from Pilansberg.

The ground has a gross capacity of 42,000 and gets its name from the local Bakofeng people who reside in the region.

Tshwane/Pretoria –

The capital city of South Africa, Pretoria has not been found wanting when it has come to providing a world-class stadium for the tournament. The Loftus Versfield Stadium has been hosting major sporting fixtures for decades and has needed minor work to bring it up to standards for the World Cup.

Now with a capacity of 50,000 fans, the stadium is home to Premier League giants Mamelodi Sundowns and the site on which "the Loftus" is built was originally used for organised sport back in 1903. The South African national soccer team have played many games here and the stadium was also used during the 1995 Rugby World Cup and the 1996 African Cup Of Nations.
