Industry experts reckon so – it has been predicted that the number of families choosing to take their annual summer break in Britain this year could increase by at least a million. And in turn, by holiday at home, families will just not be escaping the Air Passenger Tax that was contained in the recent pre-Budget report; they are also contributing to the UK travel industry, and subsequently boosting the economy.
This has led to Family Holiday Breaks Company Pontin's revealing plans to create 2,200 posts in a £50million update and expansion of its UK resorts.
Local Tourism Organisations are continuing the trend - significant funding has been put into the North West Region by the Area Development for the Visit Chester and Chesire Region. It is envisaged that 85% of visitors to this area of the UK is domestic, and all the trends point to increased business this year! The likes of the Yorkshire Tourist Board has launched a "Get more Yorkshire for your money" campaign to hopefully entice more domestic visitors from the area to visit.
So where are the best places for domestic tourists to go? The UK has some of the world’s best coastal locations from Cornwall to Northern Scotland, stunning National Parks in Derbyshire and the Lake District, city break destinations such as London and Edinburgh, and the wonderful spa resort of Bath. In a nutshell, the UK is littered with idyllic corners.
And there is so much to look forward to in the UK during 2009. This year's major events are the Homecoming Scotland Festival, taking a relaxing break at the Cotswolds which has been awarded the title of Britain's Rural Capital of Culture 2009 and the South Wales area is gearing towards holding the 2010 Ryder Cup.
