South Africa’s biggest city has a lot to offer for the seasoned traveller, so you’ll be spoilt for choice for things to see and do. Don’t bother messing around with metro, bus and taxi connections, just pick up a hire car and do it on your own terms.
We’ve knocked out a handy little car tour of Jo’burg’s best attractions, just to give you an idea of what’s on offer from behind the wheel.
Pick your car up in the centre of Johannesburg and head northbound along the M1. Get off at the Sandton exit and your right in the heart of the city’s central business district, home to the excellent Sandton City Shopping Centre (check www.mapquest.com for a detailed map of the city and its routes). From here jump back onto the M1 and continue heading north for 7 km, turning left on the N1. After 7 km, turn right along William Nicol Drive (R511) for Montecasino. This excellent entertainment complex includes the Montecasino Bird Gardens, a theatre, multiplex cinema and casino.
Get back on the N1 and circle back southbound, going right along Hans Strijdom Drive (R512) after 6 km. After around 10 km go right along the R114 and you’ll arrive at the Lion Park, an excellent self drive game reserve, home to various lion camps as well as zebra, giraffe and antelope.
Jump back onto Hans Strijdom Drive (R512) and head 1km north, turning left along the N14/R28 towards Krugersdorp. After around 15 km, take a left along Voortrekker Road towards Silverfields, turning right at Chamdor Street (R558) after about 6 km. This will take you right down to the south of Johannesburg and the N12 Freeway. Get off here and head eastbound - after 1 km you’ll come to the M68 turnoff, which will bring you to Soweto. This vibrant area was the home of Nelson Mandela, and has a distinguished link with the fall of the apartheid. Stop here for a taste of Jo’burg’s history and a colourful tour of the city’s townships.
From Soweto pick up the Soweto Highway (M70) and continue along to the M1. Turn right here, and after 1 km exit for Gold Reef City. This amusement park boasts a variety of diversions including the Apartheid Museum, a casino and the world’s deepest pub!
From here just jump back on the M1 and follow the signs to the centre of town.
