You could not get a more diverse landscape as you move from west to east in the Eastern Cape Province. The Western area is mostly 'Karoo' type, which is mainly semi-desert ground. The Eastern side is bordered by the South Indian Ocean and has many beautiful beaches. The Orange River rises in the Drakensberg Mountains and runs through the Eastern Cape Province.
The Province is mostly very hilly and mountainous, especially the area between Graaff-Reinet and Rhodes, with many mountain ranges such as the Drakensberg Mountains, Stomberge and Winterberge. The East London area, to the east, has many hills and river gorges, which make the Eastern Cape a place of natural beauty, with so much to see and do, from watersports and deep-sea fishing, to hiking, skiing and mountain climbing. It's no surprise then why it attracts so many tourists all year round!
Most of the tourist areas are located on the N2 Highway, so it's quite easy to explore the area and get around it once you get onto this road.
The following are some of the main towns and cities in the Eastern Cape Province.
Bhisho (the administrative capital), East London, Port Elizabeth in Algoa Bay(most tourists that visit the area arrive here) and Grahamstown. There are other small towns in the Cape such as Graaff-Reinet, Rhodes, Port Alfred, Uitenhage and the surfers’ mecca at Jeffrey’s Bay.
The best way to explore the area is by car and hiring a car is something most tourists do in South Africa. Book car hire South Africa.
