Car Rental Tournai-Guide to Tournai, Belgium
Tournai is a French-speaking city located in the Wallonia region of Belgium. It is located approximately 85 kilometres southwest of
Brussels and is reputed to be the oldest city in the country. It was built by the Romans on the way from Cologne to France, situated as it is only 10km from the French border.
All lovers of history and culture will be spoiled in Tournai. Visit the Notre Dame Cathedral, a fine Romanesque structure dating back to the 12th century. Paintings by Rubens and Jordaens adorn the interior, along with 700-year-old murals, a Renaissance pulpit, and a "rose window" of stained glass. The Belfry Tower, just a short stroll from the cathedral, was constructed in 1187 and provides panoramic views of the city. At 72m tall, this structure is the oldest belfry in Belgium and served as a watchtower for the city's defenders.
Over at the St Brice district are some Romanesque houses, the oldest examples of urban mercantile-class houses in Europe. Here you will also find St. Brictius's church. If you have worked up an appetite from your day's cultural touring, Tournai has some splendid restaurants to suit all budgets. Try the local delicacy Lapin a la Tournaisienne, : rabbit cooked with onions, prunes and dry raisins and served with potatoes.
