Liege is a the capital city of the French speaking region of Wallonia in Belgium. After Charleroi, it is the second most populated city in Wallonia, and is the principal economic and cultural centre of the region. The Liege metropolitan area has a population of approximately 750,000 inhabitants.
Liege is well known for two festival which take place annually. The 15 August Festival or "Le 15 aout" takes place along the Outre-Meuse district where cabbage, sausage and much beer is consumed. It is a celebration of old customs and features flea markets, puppet shows, traditional dances, processions and much more. The second festival is Saint Nicholas, usually held at the begining of December. This is an occassion for the students of the university to dress in lab gear and beg the public for money for beer.
Liege has a vibrant nightlife with pently of pubs and nightclubs. Many of these are centred around an area called Le Carre, with pubs remaining open until around 6.00am. Another popular area for nightlife is the Place du Marche. Along the Meuse River is the "Batte" market, which trades between the early hours of Sunday morning and 2.00am. Selling a variety of produce from food to crafts, it is popular amongst locals and visitors alike.
